DARREN WALKER's
PORTUGUESE
GEN
JULY/AUGUST 1999

Hi All,

I have just returned from a two week holiday in Portugal and saw some
surprising and varied things which are listed below in date order.

Firstly though a brief preview in class order:

1200s - The UVIR locomotives have no work on the Algarve as previously
reported although they appear to be solid on the following workings:

R3800 Funchiera - Barreiro and the return R3801
(one locomotive also lays over at Funchiera like the ALCO used to do).

The IRs between Casa Branca and Evora and the infrequent service between
Vendas Novas and Setil.  They also appear from time to time on the Barreiro
to Setubal/Praias-Sado services.

The UTML locomotives seem to be used as yard shunters at Barreiro and
Praias-Sado - at least they are now doing what they were built for!!!

1400s - They now have 5 diagrams on the Algarve plus a member of the class
now does the morning return trip from Tunes to Santa Clara Saboia in place
of the NOHAB railcar.  The class now appear to be infrequent on the Barreiro
suburbans.

1500s - Time may be running out with only four left in traffic these being
1501/05/10/24, Green/Silver, 1525 has now been taken out of service with
which looks to be traction motor problems (the boige was removed from under
the locomotive and the traction motor lying beside).  This has lead to 1505
being reinstated to service to cover for the loss of 1525.

However the class are solid on the overnights from Barreiro to VRSA and
return (apart from failures) the spare ALCO on the Algarve appeared during
the periods when I saw it done the 12:45 VRSA - Faro and the 17:42 Faro -
VRSA.  The class also put in irregular appearences on IR871/872 and the Beja
IRs plus a few fill in turns on the Barreiro suburbans the popular trains
being highlighted in the report below.

1551s - There are sixteen diagrams for the twenty strong fleet which are now
appearing more fequently around the Southern Region.  Out of the sixeteen
diagrams daily 9 locomotives are booked to work south of the River Tagus,
and their workings include several double headders mainly on coal trains to
Sines from Entroncamento.

They also are booked to work the wood trains from Beja to Santa Clara-Saboia
(South of Funchiera!), the Barreiro to Entroncamento and return freight, the
Entroncamento to Penalva and return steel, and a few other local freights in
and around Beja (mostly at night).

1800s- The pool of nine locomotives have seven diagrams taking the class far
and wide on some varied workings , some of which are listed below.

Two locomotives are used on the Penalva - Setubal Docks circuit carrying
cars, this trains are only visible on the mainline running from Penalva and
pass Pinhal Novo at the following times:  01:45, 08:45, 12:45, 15:55,
20:45.(incidentally the 12:45 departure from Penalva has a 1551 following it
immediatly behind with a steel train to Entroncamento).

The diargram switches over so that the second locomotive starts with the
15:55 from Penalva, this locomotive is booked off of Barreiro at 12:00 and
departs from the station, the normally park the loco in front to the 12:05
departure to Setubal.

The other locomotives are used on a variety of trains around the Southern
Region but ones to note are the cement train:
Barreiro Yard (23:00)
Evora (03:35 - 07:00) works a return ballast if needed to Casa Branca.
Estremoz (10:30 - 12:00)
Evora (15:30 - 16:00)
Barreiro Yard (21:25)

The daily coal/stone/intermodal train from Poceriao Yard to Loule
Poceriao Yard (00:35)
Loule (04:40 - 11:50)
Tunes (12:10 - 13:00)
Poceriao Yard (16:55)

The class 1900s are separately diagrammed depending on the type of coupling
arrangements and the diagram are listed below for each type:

1900s (screw link couplins)
The pool of what is believed to be seven locomotives have taken over some
strange diagrams.  Two locomotives are used daily on the three return trips
(one making one return trip around midday and the other performing an early
morning and late evening return trip) from Praias-Sado Yard to the Pirytes
Mine at Neves Corvo.  The others are used on general freight emulating from
both Barreiro and Entroncamento.

1900s (buck eyes)
There are five diagrams for what is believed to be six locomotives fitted
with buck eyes, they work exclusively trippled up on the Sines to Poceraio
Yard section of the Coal trains to Pego Power Station, of which there are
three return workings daily with some loco switching throughout the day.

1931s
The only thing to note is the use of the class on some Setubal locals as
well as on most of the following; ICs and IRs between Barreiro and the
Algarve and the IRs between Barreiro and Beja.

The class are also (well, 1938 anyway) seems to be slogging its guts on to
the now thrice weekly 'Comboio Azul' between Faro and Entroncamento.  It
runs on Mon, Wed and Fri from Faro to Porto and Sun, Tue and Thur from Porto
to Faro to the smaes times as the winter timetable.

Now for the sighted trains (I can confirm all of these are correct after
studying the some 4 hours of video!!)
